Orthodontic Emergencies

Feeling Discomfort?

Many patients will call in with a misconception that they have a true clinical emergency. Generally most advice can be given over the phone until the clinic opens the next business day. Please refer below for instructions on how to address certain issues:

Loose or Broken Bracket

Leave the loose or broken bracket in place and cover with wax for comfort. It’s okay if you swallow the bracket. We will repair the bracket at the next appointment.

Loose Band

Bands can become loose when chewing or eating sticky foods. In the rare cases we use bands and that they become loose, please call us to let us know so we can direct you properly to the next step.

Separators Fell Out

Don’t worry! This is not an emergency. Separators are there to create space between teeth. The fact that they have fallen out means that they worked! Please let the doctor know at the next appointment.

Poking Wires or Irritations

Sometimes with a loose bracket or thin wire, the wire may stick out and irritate the cheeks. If possible, push the wire back inside the molar tube with a pencil eraser or cotton swab. A clean nail clipper cleaned with rubbing alcohol can also be used to clip the wire for relief. Please contact us if you are unable to resolve the issue.
