What is a Palatal Expander?

palatal expander is a custom-made orthodontic device used to gradually widen the upper jaw (palate). This treatment is most effective in younger patients while the bones of the mouth are still growing.

By slowly applying gentle pressure, the appliance separates the two halves of the upper jaw, encouraging natural bone growth and increasing space for permanent teeth to emerge.

Benefits of Palatal Expanders

Palatal expanders are an early orthodontic treatment that widens the upper jaw to correct crowding, crossbite, and narrow arches while improving airway development and creating space for proper tooth alignment.

Creates Space for Permanent Teeth

Gently widens the upper jaw to allow permanent teeth to erupt in proper alignment, reducing the need for extractions.

Improves Bite Alignment

Corrects crossbites and ensures the upper and lower jaws fit together properly for better function and comfort.

Guides Proper Jaw Growth

Takes advantage of natural growth patterns in children to shape the jaw for long-term facial balance and health.

Improves Breathing & Airway Function

A wider palate can open nasal passages, promoting healthier breathing habits and reducing snoring.

How Palatal Expanders Create Space

Palatal expanders gently widen the upper jaw by applying pressure on the upper molars over time. As the expander is activated daily (usually with a small key), it gradually opens the mid-palatal suture, which hasn’t yet fused in children.

This process creates more room for permanent teeth to erupt in proper alignment and improves bite function.
