Team-based Approach
Treatment for Skeletal Problems
Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a specialized treatment used to correct severe jaw discrepancies and misalignments that cannot be resolved with conventional orthodontic treatments alone. This procedure involves a combination of orthodontic braces and jaw surgery to improve the function, health, and appearance of the mouth and jaw.
Indications for Surgery
When Is It Needed?
While not every patient requires surgery, a consultation with Dr. Luke Wu at Agape Orthodontics can provide a thorough assessment and personalized recommendations to determine if surgical intervention is necessary to achieve the best results.
- Severe Bite Issues
- Jaw Alignment Problems
- Facial Symmetry Concerns
- Breathing Problems
- Failure of Previous Treatments
- Gummy Smiles
- Long Term Stability
Treatment after Growth
This type of care is typically recommended for older teens and adults whose jaws have finished growing and who may be dealing with issues like significant overbites, underbites, open bites, jaw asymmetry, or difficulty chewing, speaking, or even breathing. In some cases, these jaw irregularities affect not just the function of your smile, but the overall balance of your facial features as well.
What’s the Process Like?
Surgical orthodontics is a collaborative process. First, we carefully evaluate your bite, jaw alignment, and facial structure using advanced digital imaging. From there, Dr. Luke will create a personalized treatment plan that typically begins with braces or clear aligners to position the teeth in preparation for surgery. Once the teeth are aligned, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon will perform the jaw surgery in a hospital setting under general anesthesia. After recovery, which can take several weeks, we continue your orthodontic treatment to fine-tune the bite and ensure long-term stability.
Improving Breathing and Bite Alignment
A narrow upper jaw can sometimes restrict airflow through the nasal passages, contributing to mouth breathing or snoring. By widening the palate, expanders can open up the airway and promote healthier breathing habits. Additionally, improving the alignment of the upper and lower jaws supports better function, chewing, and overall facial balance.
