Retainers Care
RETAINERS IN CUPERTINO, FREMONT, & MILPITAS, CA
Why wear retainers?
Retainers play a critical role in maintaining orthodontic outcomes following active treatment. Research shows that teeth are highly prone to relapse, with noticeable movement possible within just a few days once braces or aligners are removed. This is because the periodontal ligaments and surrounding bone structures require extended time—often six to twelve months—to reorganize and stabilize around the new tooth positions. During this period, the teeth are especially vulnerable to shifting back toward their original locations, a phenomenon known as post-treatment relapse. Long-term retainer wear is essential to counteract these natural biological tendencies, preserve the corrections achieved through orthodontic care, and ensure the longevity of the final result. Without consistent retainer use, patients risk compromising the significant time, financial investment, and effort dedicated to their smile transformation.
Therefore, it is critical to wear your retainers full time for the first three months following treatment, allowing the bone and tissues adequate time to stabilize. After this initial phase, most patients can transition to nighttime wear indefinitely. However, every case is unique, so it is essential to follow your orthodontist’s specific instructions to ensure the best long-term results.
